Indie Fashion and hairstyles
Indie fashion is extreemly diverse. So for my magazine I want to lean more towards surfer/rugged Indie clothing and hairstyles. these are some examples of what cast types I want for my magazine
A large aspect of indie clothing is second hand or vintage clothing. this gives the rugged/worn appearance coinciding with the messy, un-kept hair.
Beards and stubble are also generally conventional in indie culture. however the diversity of indie culture means that it's not essential...
There is a sense of modesty and humbleness in indie clothing and style. as if the clothing and the hair is just roughly essembled. especially in girls...

Matt is a 23 year-old musician who loves to
play, listen to and read about indie folk music. His weekly rituals are buying
GAIN magazine and finding out his favorite artist’s upcoming gigs, guitar
playing techniques and how to "make it" in the music industry. He also loves
finding out about new bands and their sounds.
Matt
likes a good range of music. He likes that the bands he discovers in GAIN
magazine because the genres are fresh and original.

Music Videos and Music Genre
The indie Genre can range from mellow to hardcore. think of it like a scale...
1)Mellow--------------1.5)---------------2)dynamic---------------2.5)-------------3)hardcore
1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS_x25knS0w this is an example of mellow indie music- usually with no distinctive rhythm or beat. generally the most lyrically influenced indie music. More mellow music tends to contain unusual instruments such as xylophones, banjos, mandolins and ukuleles.
2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGKfrgqWcv0 this is an example of dynamic indie music- tends to be catchy with a good chorus and a good beat. More like pop music. however it still has aspects of originality and quirkiness.
3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1DsD9toK-E this is an example of hardcore indie music- generally has screaming in it and is heavily influenced by heavy, complicated and fast drumbeats and distorted guitar melodies. sometimes it will be fused with dance music containing synthesised, electronic sound.
Indie music videos
Music videos tend to be hardly edited and produced; particularly mellow indie music such as video number 1. This emphasises the raw, live sound and the ambience of the room\surroundings. there are a lot of over the shoulder/point of view shots of the musicians playing the instruments so the audience can be in their shoes. this links to the lyrics of the songs generally being particularly emotive and empathetic. video 1 focuses on the lead singer's facial expressions a lot to emphasize this. video 2 focuses on the distinctive bass beat of which it shows the lead singer kicking the bass drum. The video also focuses on the amount of people watching the performance whilst using no special affects and just focuses on the passion of the musicians and the atmosphere of the live performance.
The third video focuses on the enthusiasm and the stage presence of the band because of the fact it's hardcore. this is the type of indie music that has the least lyrical pronunciation and focus because the stereotypes who listen to this genre of music dance and jump around heavily at gigs. also partly because of the artists who don't feel emotional and lyrical connection is unnecessary in the songs.
Independent label music
Indie music is commonly thought of as individual music, meaning originality. Indie actually means Independent label music which means the band or artist isn't signed to any major record labels, in theory. However bands such as Mumford and sons are signed to a major record label but are still considered indie because of the music genre. This links to the music sounding raw and live because they generally have less of a budget to spend on recording and producing music and music videos.

Photographic influences
I chose these images as influences (from the internet) because of the humbleness of the settings/performance space. The music genre links to these pictures because of the rawness and low budget. As if to emphasise that the artists are capable of producing great music in the scruffiest, abandoned places. These are closely similar to the original images I took of abandoned places in my post "Props and Locations".
Props and locations
my original images I took at an abandoned farm
I like this establishing shot because of the layer of fog that creates mysterious tension.
I like this establishing shot because of the layer of fog that creates mysterious tension.
I used a Dutch tilt in this image for disorientation and to make it look
mysterious. I did this to emphasize the setting itself. I used a low angle to
show the light shining through the gaps in the roof. I also wanted to frame the
image to show that the large containers had been broken.
This is a similar image that I took with a rule of thirds and landscape
framing. I didn't like this as much because it looked less artistic because of
the precision of the framing and the angle made the building look smaller and
less over powering than the previous image.
I liked the contrast between nature from the plants and urbanization and
graffiti from the wall.
Linking
to the previous image, I liked how nature and tranquillity contrasted with the
rubbish being dumped in the corner of the wall and the ruggedness of the wall
itself
In this image I liked the rule of thirds of the red
bar with graffiti on, next to the back wall with graffiti on, next to the
windows. I also liked the idea of a point of view shot of someone sat on the
wall.
This
is my favourite image because of the graffiti and the ruggedness of the room
contrasted with the plants growing where they shouldn’t be.
In
this image I liked the low angle focus of the brick on the bottom left of the
screen and the whole ambience of the room being the background. I also liked
the light shining through the gaps in the roof.
These are some props I'm going to use in a photo-shoot
