The indie Genre can range from mellow to hardcore. think of it like a scale...
1)Mellow--------------1.5)---------------2)dynamic---------------2.5)-------------3)hardcore
1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS_x25knS0w this is an example of mellow indie music- usually with no distinctive rhythm or beat. generally the most lyrically influenced indie music. More mellow music tends to contain unusual instruments such as xylophones, banjos, mandolins and ukuleles.
2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGKfrgqWcv0 this is an example of dynamic indie music- tends to be catchy with a good chorus and a good beat. More like pop music. however it still has aspects of originality and quirkiness.
3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1DsD9toK-E this is an example of hardcore indie music- generally has screaming in it and is heavily influenced by heavy, complicated and fast drumbeats and distorted guitar melodies. sometimes it will be fused with dance music containing synthesised, electronic sound.
Indie music videos
Music videos tend to be hardly edited and produced; particularly mellow indie music such as video number 1. This emphasises the raw, live sound and the ambience of the room\surroundings. there are a lot of over the shoulder/point of view shots of the musicians playing the instruments so the audience can be in their shoes. this links to the lyrics of the songs generally being particularly emotive and empathetic. video 1 focuses on the lead singer's facial expressions a lot to emphasize this. video 2 focuses on the distinctive bass beat of which it shows the lead singer kicking the bass drum. The video also focuses on the amount of people watching the performance whilst using no special affects and just focuses on the passion of the musicians and the atmosphere of the live performance.
The third video focuses on the enthusiasm and the stage presence of the band because of the fact it's hardcore. this is the type of indie music that has the least lyrical pronunciation and focus because the stereotypes who listen to this genre of music dance and jump around heavily at gigs. also partly because of the artists who don't feel emotional and lyrical connection is unnecessary in the songs.
Independent label music
Indie music is commonly thought of as individual music, meaning originality. Indie actually means Independent label music which means the band or artist isn't signed to any major record labels, in theory. However bands such as Mumford and sons are signed to a major record label but are still considered indie because of the music genre. This links to the music sounding raw and live because they generally have less of a budget to spend on recording and producing music and music videos.
